Poplar Problem #876142

Asked July 06, 2024, 7:03 PM EDT

We have an abundance of poplar saplings growing in our lawn which have increased rapidly since the ice storm broke the large trees and we had to cut them down. How do we get rid of them?

Expert Response

Poplars are noted for their regenerative ability. If you promptly dig the shoots or keep them cut back so they cannot photosynthesize., you can gradually starve them out. If you want to poison them, be sure to use a professional service. It is pretty drastic. I have a poplar that delights in reproducing and am careful to keep  the "extras" cut to the ground when spotted.
