Spotted this spider on our street during morning walk. What kind of spider is it? Is it related to a tarantula? Are there tarantulas in North Carolina?

Thanks for your question. This is an interesting spider! While the state is home to several tarantula-like spiders, there are no true tarantulas in the Tar Heel State.
My best guess is it's a southern trapdoor spider. Here's a guide to common spiders of North Carolina:
