Would you please take a guess about this nest I found hidden in the bushes on the side of my house? No one seems to know what it could be and I am curious. It Is built of many thick twigs which have started to come apart> It sits on a 3' high very old wood pile. It doesn't look like a racoon's nest and it couldn't be a bird because it is too low. I realize the photos are not so good and animal issues are not the purpose of this site but I thought you might know. I understand if you cannot answer. If not could you please refer me to another site? Thank you.

Expert Response

Depending on the size of the nest, we cannot rule out a bird. Some build their nests quite low or even on the ground. Wrens build their nests mainly out of twigs. Sometimes they will build several nests in different locations but then only use one of them for their brood.

Since we cannot identify it definitively, you might try contacting the Department of Natural Resources' Wildlife and Heritage Service hotline,<personal data hidden>, or emailing <personal data hidden>.
