Persimmon tree no blossoms or fruit #876125

Asked July 06, 2024, 3:48 PM EDT

About 4 years I contacted the OSU extension service about my newly planted fuyu persimmon tree which had about 25 fruits the first year, but they were small.  I was advised to pick the fruits off for the first few years to encourage the root system and structure of the tree to strengthen so it would support the weight of fruit in future years.  The next year I had only 5 blossoms and I picked the fruit off when very small.  Since then the tree has never blossomed (no fruit) although its leaves look very healthy except one small branch that appears dead and which I will prune off but have not yet done so.  The tree has grown in height.  I have watered regularly in summer months especially during excessive heat, and I've fertilized with 10-10-10.  I have read that Fuyus self-germinate and do not need a second tree to effectuate the blossom/fruit process, but it kind of seems like my tree is sterile.  Do you have any ideas for me?  I am in Beaverton, Oregon.

I’m not easily finding a reason why your persimmon tree, which fruited a few years ago, isn’t blooming now.
If it isn’t blooming, I wonder if pruning is an issue and somehow the fruiting wood is being cut or picked off. I looked at PNW 400, the basic pruning fruit trees publication, but it doesn’t give much treatment specifically for persimmons. Have you been doing the basic scaffold pruning to shape the tree?
Persimmons grow on the new growth, so that’s the tips of the branches. Don’t prune after new growth begins in late winter or early spring.
Do you think you have been pruning off the blooming tip growth?

No, because I haven’t pruned it at all.  Maybe this fall (late fall) I should snip off the ends of branches to encourage new growth and see if blossoms/fruit appear next year … ?

Barb: I was assigned your persimmon question. It is possible that the rainy cycles this spring, even with a self pollinating tree, might have affected fruit set. Also, it got quite cold last winter (16 degrees F) and that might have affected then buds that would burst into flower last spring.

As long as the tree is healthy and has borne persimmons in the past, I would stay with it.

If it continues to flower but doesn't set fruit, it is possible that the variety got mixed up and you have one that does require  cross-pollination. But that is fairly unlikely.
