Beetles #876070

Asked July 06, 2024, 12:46 AM EDT

I have a problem with little brown beetles eating all the leaves of my trees what is the best way to control them? I've tried neem oil, beetle traps and nematodes but they won't go away.

Expert Response

Hi Danial:

If you would be able to post a sharp image of the beetle(s) and tell me a little more detail, I can try to help.  What kind of trees, what does the damage look like?

Another option would be to take a sample information our local extension office.  The contact information's here:  OSU Deschutes County Extension Office

I look forward to hearing more from you,

Also the trees that the beetles are attacking are  blaze maple, plum,  cherry, mountain ash.  They seem to leave all the others alone  Because we have pear, apple, aspen, peach, red maple, silver maple and all of them remain untouched each year

Danial:

Thank you for the photos.  This is so interesting, because I'm pretty sure I've seen this same beetle for the first time this year on my property.  I have not noticed any damage though.  I believe it is the Asiatic Beetle.  I found a couple of articles about it that I am going to attach for further information. From Michigan State  University: What Are Those Little Brown Beetles?  For a more scientific introduction, including feeding habits and detection from the University of Florida: Asiatic Garden Beetle.  This final article, from the University of New Hampshire,  explores options for control, although if the numbers are large, it sound like the applications may not be helpful: The Asiatic Garden Beetle.

I believe our unusual spring weather may have had something to do with the outbreak we are seeing.

Hope you find the information helpful,
