Replace lawn with Clover? #876050

Asked July 05, 2024, 6:12 PM EDT

I am located in Central Oregon and am interested in replacing my lawn with clover. Do you have a recommendation to the type of clover (or something else that is green and drought tolerant) I should use? Thank you.

Expert Response

Hi Jessica,

Thank you for your question. Dutch white clover grows well here; it may be considered a weed by some. If you allow it to flower, it is a great pollinator plant that attracts bees (keep this in mind if you will have kids playing on the area).  Yarrow, a native plant, can also be used.

Here is a link to the Water-wise Gardening Guide in Central Oregon. Groundcovers start on page 39. Woolly thyme is a low-growing, mat-forming ground cover that could be considered.

Please reach out if you have further questions
