cutting a tree root on a crabapple tree #876024

Asked July 05, 2024, 4:04 PM EDT

I have a non fruit bearing crabapple tree that I am installing a brick border around (about 5 ft. out). BUT I have a 2" root right near the surface that is in my way. CAN I CUT THIS ROOT OFF/BACK WITH OUT HARMING THE TREE?

Warren County Iowa

Expert Response

It is best not to cut roots that large.  This could sever the tree from a significant portion of its root system, causing health problems like leaf drop and branch dieback.  Additionally, it can negatively affect the stability of the tree.  It would be best to work around this root or move the border out further where the root may be deeper in the soil and smaller in diameter.

Cutting roots as small as 1 inch in diameter could have negative consequences, but most guidance advises never cutting roots larger than 2 inches.
