Need to replace lawn? #875989

Asked July 05, 2024, 11:41 AM EDT

I don't see lawns specifically here but I'm pretty sure I need to remove part of our lawn in back and don't want to ask anyone who sells sod.  A few years ago we had two people come out (agronomists?) to advise on our lawn which had 'fairy ring'.  We took their advice and the results were superb.  Do you still do house calls?

I was the one who made the site visit. I would be happy to help you. If you can send me photos and what you're planning to do, I can give you advice.

My email is: <personal data hidden> if it's easier to email me directly. Thanks!

Thank you very much. We are out of town this week but I will send those pics when we get back over the weekend.

Hi, we just got back today.  Before we left I increased watering days by one because of predicted heat.
The section to the left was damaged by two dogs.  We only have one dog now but this has happened every year when the grass greens up again.  This is the first year that this section didn't take extra TLC and overseeding.
The section on the right side is worse than last week. I sent a picture last year to your colleague and he said we had grubs.  I successfully treated it with GrubX and it came back nicely.  I pried back a small piece last week and found no grubs.  I don't know what to make of it.  I'm thinking I need to re sod at least the damaged section but I took your advice to heart initially and have double aerated and spread perennial rye seed.  New sod would no doubt be BlueGrass.  You may recall we had problems with fungus rings and that was your advice and it worked beautifully.  Now I don't know what to do but will gladly accept your input again.

Hi again,

Any photos you can share? You can email me directly too: <personal data hidden>

If the lawn is not responding to reseeding, there might be an issue with coverage with your sprinklers. It would be good to check the heads to make sure they are popping up over the surface, are straight, and providing coverage over the entire area - put out a few cups to collect the water.

Besides the dog doors. The dry looking section has responded very well to reseeding. It’s only this year that it has looked this way. Usually thick and lush.

imageThis is another section of the lawn. I will try your idea about placing cups there. This section gets 7 mins of watering three times on watering days. I recently increased the time and added a fourth day.
I’ll let you know how it goes.
Thanks as always.

Hi again,

The straight line - was something lying there that caused the turf to discolor?

Increasing your watering days won't help, unless you can adjust the heads accordingly. I would first adjust the heads and then continue with three days a week. This is such a slight browning, that I suspect it will recover with cooler weather and perhaps some rain.
