Hi Joy,

There are a number of reasons why your pole beans might be lacking flowers.

Here are some possibilities:

1. Weather.  We've been having a heatwave lately with hot, very sunny days with only short blips of more normal temps between. Plants react by trying to preserve themselves and internal processes will slow and even drop buds and blossoms.  65 to 85 degrees are best for bean flowering and pod production. Above that,  reproductive systems (flowers) will take second place to keeping leaves to continue creating food for itself.  So leaves can continue to look pretty good but flowering would be delayed until normal temps return.

2. Age of bean planting or cultivar of bean.  Some bean varieties may take longer to get to the flowering stage than others.

3. Amount of nitrogen in the soil-- if you happened to use fertilizer or high nitrogen compost in the garden the beans may be reacting to that. Beans produce their own nitrogen but adding much more can enhance the vegetative growth in plants more than any flower production.
