Hungry pests #875884

Asked July 03, 2024, 8:52 PM EDT

For 2 years now something has been munching my roses. I live in a small fenced yard. I also have a raised container box and I think it’s the same insect that ate all the kale and bok choy but not herbs or lettuce. I sprayed with Neem oil early on but it didn’t help.

Hello Tina,

Roses, although beautiful, are susceptible to many fungal diseases and insect attacks. The diseases include black spot, anthracnose and leaf spot disease, botrytis, root rot, bacterial canker, powdery and downy mildew, to name a few. Aphids, many kinds of beetles, caterpillars, leaf cutter bees are among the insect that attack roses. Read more here:

Your plants may have powdery mildew which is a common disease that infects many different plant species. The fungus that causes powdery mildew loves hot days and cool nights, especially when the humidity is high. It is exacerbated when plants are planted close together reducing air circulation.

Prevention depends on good plant sanitation. Water early in the day so the leaves dry out quickly. Remove damaged stems and leaves and destroy them. Do not leave them on the ground around the plant as the fungus spores live in the soil and can splash up onto the plant. After the first frost, remove the remaining foliage and clean up the ground around the plants to eliminate sites for insect pests and disease spores.

Use a preventive fungicide when environmental conditions are favorable for fungal conditions. If chemicals are used, fungicide must be applied before the symptoms appear because fungicides are preventative but do not kill the disease. When applying chemicals, read the instructions on the label to ensure that it can be used on roses and for the application amounts and specific rates for the plant.

The holes in the leaves of your plants may have been caused by sawfly larva in the spring. And there appear to be scale insects on the plants also. Read more here
