Rust colored leaves on White Oak #875883

Asked July 03, 2024, 8:33 PM EDT

I have a 8 year old White Oak in front of my house that is getting rust colored leaves.  They aren't dropping off and other than color, look healthy.  Does this indicate  a disease process and if so, what should I do to remedy the issue.

Expert Response

Thanks for sending the photos. In general, your oak does look healthy. However, we've had a hot, dry summer which can affect the tree. I would recommend making sure that the tree is receiving the right amount of water. You can do the screwdriver test where you stick a screwdriver into the ground near the base of the tree to see if it's wet or dry.

There are several types of white oaks that thrive in the west with different care requirements. Utah State University has an informative fact sheet on oaks that you might find informative. Here is a link to the fact sheet: https://extension.usu.edu/yardandgarden/research/oaks-in-the-landscape
