Is my Cotoneaster (recently transplanted) dead? #875808

Asked July 03, 2024, 1:15 PM EDT

We recently (in the spring - April) had a landscaping crew out to do some work for us including heavily pruning and moving our 2 cotoneaster shrubs from one area to in front of our shed. We do have A LOT of natives and I know this is often considered invasive, but I love the white flowers in the spring and red berries in the winter not to mention that the birds adore these shrubs. We do keep them pruned and they have not spread - we have had them for years. One of them seems fine and the other, I fear, is dead but I keep hoping against hope that it will come back next year. Pics enclosed. I have been faithful about using a TREE IV (deep root watering) for them both. Please take a look at the photos of them and advise me if I should give up the ghost on the one that looks poorly. Thank you. ~JM

Hi,

There is a chance it could come back from the roots. You can also do a scratch test and on the cambium layer -outer bark to see if it looks green underneath. If the branches are dry and brittle you can start pruning them off. If you hit green wood then you can leave that.
