Help with possible Lantern-fly infestation #875799

Asked July 03, 2024, 12:39 PM EDT

Hello, I recently moved into a townhouse in Baltimore and discovered lantern flies near and on the tree that sit next to my front porch. I saw about three, but assume there are lots more The are also many ants on the bark as well. I am seeking assistance for how to eliminate the lantern flies from my property. Because I just purchased the home I have no clue how long the bugs have been there or the health of the tree. Your help would be greatly appreciated it!

Expert Response

This is a Spotted Lanternfly nymph (juvenile). Pesticide sprays are not needed or recommended, and since they jump readily, they will also not work very well since they will not come into contact with much of the spray residues.

They are very abundant in much of the state now but it is showing that areas where there were initially high populations have since declined. Since they are so abundant we don't recommend you try to kill them since more will just appear. Any pesticide you would need to use will be harmful to our beneficial insects. You can learn more about this insect on the linked page.
