Japanese beetles on fruit trees #875784

Asked July 03, 2024, 10:56 AM EDT

We have thousands of Japanese beetles infesting our fruit trees. We live in a neighborhood. We have 1 cherry, 1 apricot, 2 plum trees that are being defoliated. We have 6 other fruit trees that are currently safe. How do we get rid and prevent for future?

Hello Abby:

Thank you for your question. Japanese beetles are the bane to gardeners all over the Unites States. It can be especially difficult to control in a neighborhood setting if neighbors do not take control methods to eliminate them as well.  I'm not sure if your neighbors have tried control methods, but if neighbors are trying to control them using traps, this method only lures more beetles to the area (see resources below).

Exclusion netting is an option for non-chemical management- https://extension.umn.edu/yard-and-garden-insects/japanese-beetles#non-chemical-management-options-1591111

Lawn Management and grub control is key to controlling japanese beetle infestations- https://www.uvm.edu/~entlab/Landscape%20IPM/WhitegrubsinsoilJune2023.pdf

I hope this information is helpful.
