Is is rhubarb? #875780

Asked July 03, 2024, 10:37 AM EDT

I found this plant in with my rhubarb. I wasn't aware rhubarb had runners. Is it rhubarb? it doesn't look like the rhubarb that has been growing. I just want to be sure it's safe to eat. Maybe a different type? Thank you, in advance, for your assistance.

Hello,

No that is not a different species of rhubarb and no it is not edible. The variegated plant in your picture is Goutweed or Bishop’s weed (Aegopodium podagraria). Read more here: https://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?taxonid=243464&isprofile=0&

It is in invasive species in Michigan. Read more here: https://www.misin.msu.edu/facts/detail/?project=misin&id=54&common=Bishop%27s+goutweed

Because of its rhizome root system, it can be difficult to eradicate it. As you have just a few plants, it may not be difficult to pull up the plants and dispose of them. If it expands to a large area, smothering may be the way to remove it. Mow it down as low as possible; cover the area with cardboard, kraft paper or several layers of newsprint; cover the paper with 3 inches on mulch to suppress the growth. Pull out any stray plants that escape the cover. It may take two or three seasons to successfully eliminate the plants.
