Although I have increased native plants, don’t use insecticides etc, I have virtually no insects in my yard this year. Last year it was teeming with them. Could the heavy rain be the culprit?

It will depend on the type of insects. Water loving insects such as mosquitoes will be in excess, probably for the rest of the summer.
Personally I have noticed pollinating insects ( bees and wasps not butterflies) more recently since the rains have let up. I would think the insects will be back.
