Any suggestions why ethanol would be twice as toxic to women as it is to men, as your dietary intake guidelines imply? Or otherwise why woman ought to consume no more than half the volume a man may?

Expert Response

Women are more vulnerable to ethanol toxicity than men because they have less alcohol dehydrogenase, an enzyme that breaks down alcohol before it reaches the bloodstream.  Women also have less body water to dilute alcohol, so it becomes more concentrated in their systems.  This means that women tend to have higher blood alcohol levels than men after drinking the same amount of alcohol, and the effects can occur more quickly and last longer.

The recommendation for women to reduce long-term health risks is to consume no more than 7 drinks a week and no more than one drink a day.  https://www.prevention.va.gov/Healthy_Living/Limit_Alcohol.asp
