You should be able to dig them out without too much difficulty if they are more shrub size at this point than tree form. You may end up leaving some roots behind that could sucker (sprout up from the roots) later in the season or next year. If that happens, just dig those out as well...and by that point you should have exhausted any resources the plant had left to sprout again.
