Crawfish Issue #875733

Asked July 02, 2024, 7:45 PM EDT

I discovered a large mound of hard, clay mud inside of the automatic pool cover box at my house. I’m not sure but I suspect I might have a crawfish issue. There is a small 3 inch drain hole in the bottom of the cover box that something is coming up through and causing this. I did see a crawfish in there three years ago inside of my pool. The mound of mud is hard and has a small hole in the top. I suppose the issue could also be another animal like moles or voles because I can see evidence and tracks in the grass area of our yard that has been damaged. The inground pool was put in 4 years ago. Further back in our yard is a large storm sewer that several houses drains and yards divert water to. There is a fair amount of water back there when it rains. Just trying to confirm if you think this is probably a crawfish issue and if so, how would I go about remediating it. Thank you. Photos of the mud inside of the cover box and where the drain cover was popped off, and of the crawfish from 3 years ago.

Expert Response

Good afternoon and thank you for your question.  Yes, the mud piles you are seeing has been caused by crawdads.  I'm assuming you have a pond or stream near by?  It is likely you have a leak somewhere in your pool or plumbing that is causing the soil to remain constantly wet.  Once the soil has dried out, they will not return.  They tend to go back to the stream to mate, but will venture out for food with the right conditions.  Since there is likely a water source nearby in which they live, pesticides are ruled out due to potential contamination reasons. If you can divert rain water away from the pool area, that will also help.  It is all down to moisture. I wish you all the best.

Thanks.
