I live in Sherwood and our 20+ year old tree has these growths start appearing this year at nearly every "growth" joint. I think this contributed to weakening the joint causing one fairly large branch to break off . They look like a form of lichen. Any thoughts if these should be treated? If so, what would you suggest that won't harm the tree?

This is common moss and is not contributing to tree breakage. It can indicate a dense tree canopy, and many trees benefit from pruning to increase air circulation and allow more light through the canopy.
Additionally, as you are finding, a tree can develop dense branching at the ends of limbs, eventually weighing more than the “scaffolding” structure of main branches can support. It may be a normal growth pattern for the tree, but in home landscapes pruning to reduce chance of limb loss is recommended.
If you are uncertain about pruning it yourself, consider hiring a certified arborist.
