Aster Yellows #875716

Asked July 02, 2024, 5:39 PM EDT

Hello, This is my second year with this problem and while it only bothered my asters it seems it now likes my snapdragons. I know once a plant is infected it can't be cured. But if I water correctly and fertilize get it stronger to fight the disease? My asters are lime green, but the leaves still look healthy. They are large and pointed up, as if they are happy. I've started these in the greenhouse and grown them under insect cover since I put them outside. I haven't a clue how they got infected with being so careful. I have 3 plants I left in the greenhouse and they are healthy. I guessing you have to grow Asters in a greenhouse for good results. I had two years where I was able to grow them fine outside, but not the last two years. So frustrating.

Thank you for reaching out to ask2.extension.

Aster yellows can affect a variety of plants, not just asters.  Could it be something else beside aster yellows?  With our wet weather, there are a number of things that could be affecting your garden.

If it is aster yellows, the leaf hoppers may have escaped your notice.  They tend to survive, especially with the drier winter we had.

If you go to extension.umn.edu and search aster yellows, there is some good information on the disease and how to help control the spread.

Deb,

Thanks so much for your reply.  I don't think it is Aster Yellows.  I think growing under the insect netting wasn't allowing enough light and plants were lacking in Chlorophyll .  I took it off and they seem to be doing well.  I know they look lots better from last year so keeping my fingers crossed that they will continue to grow and bloom.
