What virus is this? #875707

Asked July 02, 2024, 4:39 PM EDT

I’m a beginner with a backyard vine I transplanted from a shady spot in my yard to a sunny spot about 7-8 years ago. I recently have become much more interested in growing and harvesting grapes. A friend who owns a winery up north suggested I have a virus but they could not identify it. Can you identify the virus and suggest a best path forward?

Expert Response

It does look like it may be leafroll, which is a viral disease that is most prevalent in areas with commercial grape production. However, there are other possibilities, such as environmental problems or nutrient deficiency. Please refer to the following articles, and consider whether the symptoms and patterning match what you have.

You also might consider doing a soil test or even leaf nutrient test, to see whether nutrient deficiency might be the problem. Also, have any pesticides been sprayed on or near the grape vine?
