pink roadside flowers #875686

Asked July 02, 2024, 2:51 PM EDT

I've seen much of this pink flowering groundcover along highways, so I'm wondering if the DOT is seeding this? Is it an invasive planting? Do I need to keep it from spreading to nearby roadsides?

Expert Response

Hi Terrance,

Crown vetch is an aggressive groundcover that was planted on the sides of Minnesota highways decades ago. It hasn't been planted for some time, and it's no longer legal to sell or propagate this plant here.

Because it's so tough and hard to kill, I think eradicating it now is too big a job.

If you want to take some kind of action I recommend contacting the State Department of Agriculture or Ramsey County.

Thanks!
