spotted lantern fly #875661

Asked July 02, 2024, 1:16 PM EDT

I identified 1 spotted lantern fly and many nymphs in my gardens in Cleveland. The nymphs are difficult to pinch. I was wondering if there are other methods to control that is safe for produce.

Expert Response

Aside from scraping egg masses off buildings, trees, shrubs, or any outdoor items and destroying them by submerging them in rubbing alcohol or by burning them, egg masses can also be killed by spraying them with a spray oil labeled for spotted lanternfly and safe to use on edible crops. Several common products contain ingredients that are available to homeowners with SLF infestations. Effective ingredients include: beta-cyfluthrin, bifenthrin, carbaryl, dinotefuran, imidacloprid, zeta-cypermethrin, neem oil, and insecticidal soaps, however not all of these are food safe. Please be sure to check labels and instructions for any related products you choose to use.
