I have an established Japanese red maple that is about 20' tall and spreads about 25'. Yesterday a large branch from an 80' hickory tree fell and broke a branch off the maple which was about 6" in diameter. There is now a large, rather deep wound on the main trunk of the tree about 3' above its base. How should treat the wound to preserve the tree?

Expert Response
Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do but to let the wound callous over and dry up. It isn't an ideal break or would but we do not recommend putting any sealant or tree product on it as it could trap bacteria, fungal spores, or insects inside.
Just keep the tree watered when needed and reduce additional stress when possible. Monitor for any signs of canopy stress or boring insect holes along the trunk.
