Killing Grass #875611

Asked July 02, 2024, 9:36 AM EDT

Hello-I have grass growing my horses dry lot, and due to a health condition my horse has (insulin resistance), she can't have grass, so it's got to go. I've used 30 and 45% vinegar mixed with salt and dish soap, which works temporarily, but with all this rain, I can't keep ahead of it. Would you have another method that doesn't involve glyphosate, that would be safe for my horse AND kills the grass? The weeds I don't mind, as they will die with the vinegar solution. It's the grass that's tough to kill. I initially inquired to <personal data hidden>, and they referred me to your site. Many thanks! Geri

Your vinegar solution will never kill the grass or the weeds completely. This solution only desiccates the tops and does nothing to kill the roots.

To remove the grass you have a couple options:

Dig it out or hire a sod remover if it is a large area which it sounds like it is.

Use an herbicide but then you would have to keep your horse out of the area for some time. An effective herbicide will take 2 weeks to work.

You could also solarization the area. If the horse is in the area you would have to do this in sections so that the plastic doesn’t get trampled but this would fix your problem.Clear plastic has been found to be the most effective. It will take about 6 weeks. Slow but effective.

Dear Deb,

Thanks for your information on killing the grass in my dry lot.

I like the solarization idea and will try it out.  I wonder tho, with all this rain, some areas of the grass have puddles. Do I need to wait until it dries out, or can I put the clear plastic over the wet areas?

I would wait until the puddles are mostly dry. I think we are in for a few sunny days next week.
