Hi, how do livestock farmers in Michigan (and broadly the US) handle excess manure produced on farms, if they don't have enough cropland to apply it to? How far will they typically have to haul it to other cropland, or are other methods usually employed?
Thanks & kind regards,
Alex

Thank you for contacting MSU Extension. I'm not sure I can speak to the rest of the United States however, in Michigan, we utilize manure on cropland or send it to a digester. The cropland could be owned or rented by the farm or another farm. Some manure is sold. Liquid manures travel short distances usually no more than 60 miles. Dry manures like poultry litters can travel much farther. You may be interested in this website https://lpelc.org/manure-nutrient-management/

Hi, thank you so much for the reply.
What are the typical costs of collecting and hauling the manure per mile?
Thanks & kind regards,
Alex.
