Excess manure handling on livestock farms #875501

Asked July 01, 2024, 1:21 PM EDT

Hi, how do farmers in Oregon (and broadly the US) deal with excess manure from livestock? How far do they typically have to haul it to cropland or are other methods usually employed? Thanks & kind regards, Alex

Expert Response

Hi Alex,
If your livestock are producing more manure that can be utilized on your own property consider:
-Posting on Craigslist and/or online local social media forums. Gardeners are often looking for organic matter to add to their soil.  It's best if the manure is composted or aged to help reduce the amount of weed seeds and possible pathogens in the product. Often the manure compost is offered at no cost if the gardener hauls it.
-Lane Forest Product (and possibly Rexius) in Eugene accepts livestock manure to add to their commercial composting process.  There is a tipping fee for this service. You haul to their site.
-If it's a product that might work for farms and you would like to provide me with additional information, I would be happy to share the opportunity with local farmers who are part of my Extension farmer network.
If you'd like to discuss any of these options, please feel free to contact me directly.
