hole on concrete #875493
Asked July 01, 2024, 12:53 PM EDT
Hello, The picture shows the side of my concrete patio where it meets another concrete surface. The brown u shaped substance around the hole maybe mud. The hole is formed by the "mud" on the side of the concrete. It looks like it would wash away. Underneath the hole is a yellow substance surrounded by orange. It doesn't seem to wash away like the brow u shaped stuff. The stuff that you can see in the hole is just leaf/grass debris. Any idea what may have made this hole around the concrete?

Expert Response
Hello!
From what I can see in the photo, I suspect you may be seeing a slime mold--an organism related to fungi that often appears when conditions are right in the summer. It appears most commonly on wood mulch or other organic surfaces, but if the crack between the patio and the pavers contains organic matter, or if the soil beneath it does, it could be suitable habitat. Slime molds are not pathogenic, but to remove it you can likely scrape it off and dispose of it in the trash--this may help minimize future appearances.
I hope this is helpful.
Cordially,
John
