Pruning sealer #875479

Asked July 01, 2024, 11:30 AM EDT

I have seen conflicting advice on pruning sealers for trees. Some says to not seal, others say use a commercial pruning sealer, and others recommend latex paint. I need to trim some oak trees, and although it's best to not trim in the summer, read that the risk of oak wilt decreases after July 15th, should I use latex paint or pruning sealer in a spay can?

Hi Gary, thanks for the question.

There seems to a consensus among academia, that pruning sealers actually disrupt the natural healing process. Oak trees are an exception. If pruned between April15 and July16 the wounds should be painted immediately (within 15 minutes) with a latex house paint.  Check out the following links:

I hope this is helpful.
