Garlic dead #875473

Asked July 01, 2024, 11:10 AM EDT

Hello, I just recently pulled up a variety of garlic that I planted in October. I’m growing close to 100plants. This variety turned yellow and died before even forming scapes. I pulled them up and now am unsure what happened as they didn’t bulb. Im attaching a photo of the garlic patch. They were at the north end. The rest appear perfectly healthy. We have had tons of rain but it hasn’t affected the majority of the plants. Thanks!

It is probable that particular variety does not do well in Minnesota.  It may have been a softneck garlic.  Here is information:   https://extension.umn.edu/vegetables/growing-garlic

Thanks for the reply and link. The variety is hardneck, that’s all I’ll grow. I did get it locally too and they grew huge bulbs of the variety… I’m wondering if you could help with diagnosis at all? It’s way too early for it to have died without having formed scapes, and the conditions for the others in the same bed has been no different. It doesn’t appear to be a disease that I’m aware of or can find on this diagnostic software within umn extension, would you agree? Thanks.

Searching brought up a publication on Diseases and Pests of Garlic that covered just about everything that could possibly happen.  I am giving you a link to that.  I am thinking that this happened to the whole planting of one variety, somewhere those cloves must have been exposed to a disease.  I would guess the cloves were all together in one bag so one infected one would have passed it along to the rest.  You could try sending a sample to the Plant Health Clinic but the plants are probably already mushy.  The article mentions planting mustard there to cleanse the soil.  I have no university based knowledge of that practice.  Maybe the descriptions of various diseases might match up with what happened to your variety.  Sorry I can't make a diagnosis, only suggestions.  https://www.rasacreekfarm.com/garlic-diseases-and-pests
