Huge bug that I can't identify #875440

Asked July 01, 2024, 9:10 AM EDT

The body is the size of a European hornet and the translucent wings are the size of a butterfly. I can't submit a picture because my phone doesn't have your format.

If you can upload the photo online and share a link to it, we can try to look at it that way, or you can try pasting the image directly into the body of your reply. Unfortunately, without a photo, we can't really guess as to what insect you saw.

I can attach to an email. See below. Thanks.

Thank you for the photos. This looks like a moth, probably a Polyphemus Moth, that has lost all of its scales (the dust-like covering on moth and butterfly wings and bodies that give them a colorful-winged, fuzzy-bodied appearance). Perhaps it was old (they only live a couple weeks as adults) and attacked by a predator, since it's so unusual to see one missing this many scales. The antennae suggest it is male, since female moth antennae aren't this feathery.

Thank you!
