Available product for grasshopper control #875438
Asked July 01, 2024, 9:04 AM EDT
What product can I actually purchase to rid grasshoppers? Have tried diatomaceous earth and had no impact. All of the recommended bait and such are not options. Even sevin is no longer the referenced carbaryl Ingredient

Hi Sherry,
I'm sorry to hear about your grasshopper issues!
Many products are available, including carbaryl (because Sevin) is a brand name, they make formulations of multiple ingredients, but Sevin brand carbaryl is available, at least, from online retailers if not in brick-and-mortar stores).
Other insecticides include malathion, permethrin, and the organic option, Neem oil.
Depending on the size of the area to be protected and the crop, exclusion may be a good chemical-free option too. For large areas, a trap crop that is treated (as opposed to treating the desired plants) can be effective. Treatment of the trap crop could be chemical, or could be something like an enclosure of chickens or hand-picking.
I hope this is helpful.
Cordially,
John
