Tree Stump Odor? #875391

Asked June 30, 2024, 6:54 PM EDT

Hello, We recently had a large diseased silver maple removed from our backyard. We had the tree stump ground down to the surface, but not below that. The area that used to be in the center of the stump is fairly mulchy in texture, but has a strong odor that smells like dog poop. Is there anything we can add to the organic material in that area to help rid the smell/odor? Thanks

Expert Response

What you smell is the wood rotting.  The cure is to rake a good portion of the wood chips and soil mix out and add some good soil and grass seed.  What you dig out can go to a compost site.
