Expert Response

The most straightforward method for managing Volutella in Pachysandra is to mow-down the Pachysandra with a lawn mower or string trimmer, removing all of its foliage. Then, rake-out and dispose of all debris, including any old fallen tree leaves that accumulated beneath the plants. The groundcover, if otherwise well-established with healthy roots, will regrow on its  own. With this dry weather, monitor them closely for watering needs, especially if they share a root zone with a mature tree. Fungicide can help suppress re-infection, but should not be needed for most outbreaks, and its use might also risk harming pollinators or other organisms. If used, follow all product directions carefully, and make sure the label includes Volutella as one of the diseases it controls.
