What to do with our wool #875334

Asked June 30, 2024, 11:34 AM EDT

Are the extension services in Ohio working on any new outlets for our wool? Now that Wool Growers has closed, we are struggling to find ways to market our wool. Burning or burying the Wool is a huge waste. Thanks for your help.

First, one bulk wool sale option is Groenewold Fur and Wool Co.  They have at least 2 buyers in Ohio.  I can provide contact information if you would like.

As far as other uses for wool, there has been some research Ohio State Extension has shared involving creating wool pellets that can be used as a good source of nitrogen for vegetables.  Wool has also showed promise as a mulch since it will last at least 2 years and is completely biodegradable.  Wool may have some pest control ability when used in garden settings.  The wool pellets also are able to reduce moisture loss from the soil while making it available for the plants.

Largely due to issues with the wool market, a number of people have made the switch to hair sheep.
