Agriculture question- Juniper tree debris #875322

Asked June 30, 2024, 10:09 AM EDT

What can the litter from juniper trees be useful for? The soil around my trees from the decomposed leaves and berries looks and feels like great soil but it seems like nothing wants to grow in it under the trees. Is this because the litter is harmful to most plants? It would be great to find a use for this material around our property or in our garden especially. Thanks!

Expert Response

Hi Jordan,

I know that some landscapers will use the duff if planting native plants as a mulching material around it. It has been explained to me that there is beneficial microorganisms in the duff.  So that may be a possibility.   But I also know that there was some research that showed Western Junipers can produce some allelopathic compounds that can prevent certain plants from growing.  So I do not have any suggestions for you on how to use the extra material.  You can contact <personal data hidden>  our regional forester, as she may have additional ideas.    thanks
Thank you for the information!
