Replacing peonies #875296

Asked June 29, 2024, 8:10 PM EDT

We are having 4 large peony plants removed. They’re getting too big and are more work than I’d like. We’re looking for suggestions to replace them with plants or small bushes that don’t require a lot of work and the rabbits won’t eat. I’m the attached pictures 2 of them have been cut back a lot.

Expert Response

Good Morning Nancy,

Thank you for contacting the U of M Extension Service.

Please click on the following link from the U of M Extension Yard and Garden website about tree and shrub selection: https://extension.umn.edu/find-plants/trees-and-shrubs

You should consider how much direct sun exposure your site has. All of the above areas are expandable to show more information.

You could also consider going to a local nursery and walking through the shrubs and looking at their tags. The tags will show required sun exposure and mature size of the shrub.

Good Luck!
