weeding Rose Garden #875292

Asked June 29, 2024, 7:06 PM EDT

Garden area planted with roses has been taken over with wild violets. At first I thought they might make a pretty ground cover under the rose bushes, but they spread like wild fire. They are showing up in the lawn and many neighboring areas. Can I spray these like weeds and not hurt the roses? If so what product would work best. Thank you for your help,

Thank you for your question, Jeri.  Although the following is intended for control of wild violets for lawns, it is helpful for rose beds as well:   https://extension.psu.edu/lawn-and-turfgrass-weeds-wild-violet

Any time you are applying an herbicide by spraying, you run the risk that overspray will hit and hurt wanted plants.  Wrapping the rose bushes, applying when there is no wind, and keeping the spray as close to the violet are ways to reduce the risk.  Good luck!
