What is the orange growth on the lodgepole branch shown in the photo?  Is is concerning?  What should be done if anything?  Thanks.

Expert Response

Hello Mr Townsend,

Sorry for the delay in response.

From what I can see in the photograph, it looks like you are dealing with pine-gall rust, a fungus that infects lodgepole and ponderosa pines in our area.  The rust releases orange spores (that you are seeing here) that can begin new infections on branches/trunks of nearby trees.

The easiest course of action is to prune out the galls, though on a main trunk this will cause malformation (at best).

This document from the US Forest Service provides some additional information: https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/r10/forest-grasslandhealth/?cid=fsbdev2_038389

I hope this is helpful!

Cordially,

John
