I have two dogwoods in my yard. They are fairly old but I can’t tell you exactly the age, as they were here when we moved in. They don’t look very healthy. What would you suspect is wrong with them and how can we improve its health?

Hi Rachael and thanks for your question about your ailing dogwood trees. This looks like a fungal disease due to our wet- and-then-hot -and-then-wet-again weather this spring. The trees should pull out of it, but be sure they are getting the proper care:
- a soil test will tell you if the soil is acid enough (5.5-7.0 is fine)
- well drained soil around the base, not standing in water
-trunks shaded from direct sun
-water by soaker hose so as not to wet the trunks or branches
-rake and destroy fallen leaves this autumn
I hope this helps give your trees the care to remain beautiful additions to your yard!
