Expert Response

Hello Crystal,

Thank you for your question.

Your butterfly bush might be responding to our lengthy heat wave, especially if it has not been getting enough water. Like most plants, they can also be stressed by too much water, but I'm guessing that is not the issue here, unless you have been watering it daily.

Resources advise to cut away damaged branches, but it looks as if your whole plant is affected. If you haven't already, give it a good soaking, but do not wet the leaves. The leaves might also have been damaged by the sun after being watered. The sun can burn wet leaves.

Water

This plant likes a medium-moisture environment and will do poorly at either extreme—intolerant of drought or boggy locations that don't drain well. They will thrive on 1/2 inch of water by rain or irrigation each week.

Hopefully this will be helpful to you and your bb will recover. It is a tough plant, but many plants are being challenged by changes to our weather patterns.

Good gardening to you,
