What is this plant? #875213

Asked June 29, 2024, 10:38 AM EDT

I’d like to know how I should care for this plant through the year. I want to provide feed for the birds through the winter in my Eugene garden, so should I leave the dead blooms or deadhead them when they fade? If leaving, the blooms means I will have a lot more plants seating themselves, how can I balance feeding the birds and keeping my garden growth under control?

Looks like native Mule's Ear sunflower. As a habitat plant the seed stalks should be left. If you do not like the untidy look, you can cut them back. Yes, they can reseed, but the seedlings can be easily pulled.
