NorthEast Michigan orchard/fruit farm? #875154

Asked June 28, 2024, 5:13 PM EDT

Hi, my family owns ~12 acres in Ossineke (outside Alpena) that has been used to graze horses for the past ~30 years. The land is open fields, with a handful of trees. There are ~4 apple trees that are absolutely loaded down with small apples almost every year (we usually feed them to horses). There are ~15 huge maple trees (I believe sugar maples), some are ~60 feet tall and ~30+ feet wide by my estimation. All of these trees have been here >35 years, when we bought the property. This is to say that I believe our soil/land is suitable for orchards/trees. I'm interested in using the most sustainable, scientific, productive, ecologically respectful practices to start an orchard here (or fruit farm), which could someday become profitable. Any suggestions on where to start? What might grow best here, now and in the future?

Hello. I do know that apples will grow in your neck of the woods pretty well. I work with a small commercial grower there, and their apples do well. I don't think that you will be able to grow cherries or peaches as it will be too cold. You could do strawberries and raspberries too! Will you have a fruit stand? Farmers' markets? Thinking about where or how to sell your products will be important. You will also want to think about a pesticide applicator license, even if you are organic. Do you have a tractor? Sprayer?

Let me know your thoughts.
