Jumping worm eggs #875110

Asked June 28, 2024, 12:59 PM EDT

Are you able to drown jumping worms eggs? I received some plants, but was not able to get the dirt off/wash off the plants at the donor sites. I washed off the plants into a very large bucket before planting them in the yard. Can I just let the dirt stay in the water to kill any potential jumping worm eggs and how long?

Expert Response

Good Morning Katherine,

Thank you for contacting the U of M Extension Service.

Here is a link to the latest jumping worms research on our website: https://extension.umn.edu/identify-invasive-species/jumping-worms#frequently-asked-questions-about-jumping-worms-1883164

This information does not address the eggs or drowning the eggs. Based on the latest information, I am not sure about the eggs. You could possibly pour out the water on pavement or concrete and let it dry out. Hopefully they would die in the sunshine.

It is a nasty, invasive pest and we don't want to be bringing it into our gardens.

Good Luck!
