Sickly Elm Tree - Unusual bark #875102

Asked June 28, 2024, 12:00 PM EDT

Newly planted tree by builder 3 months ago. I think it is some type of Elm. Not doing great. Is getting enough water. Soil is clay like. The bark looks very unusual, does anybody know if this is normal or is a sign of a disease/fungal/pest issue.

Expert Response

Hello Mike,

Thank you for your question. From what I can see here, it does look like this tree has a problem. There's the unusual bark, plus it looks like the leaves are turning yellow, then brown.

Assuming it is an elm, the problem could be Botryodiplodia canker. Here are the symptoms of this disease:

  • Reddish brown to black water soaked cankers form on branches 4 inches in diameter or smaller
  • Sap wood underneath the canker is reddish brown
  • Leaves growing beyond the canker turn yellow and wilt (Siberian elm) or fall off (American elm)
  • Clumps of sprouts or shoots develop below cankers on large branches
  • Tiny raised pimple like fungal structures form on branches killed by the canker, causing bark to look rough
  • Damage is most severe on trees stressed by other factors

Take a look at the referenced article for photos. The article states up front that this disease is hard to detect on most hardwood species. I encourage you to consult an arborist for an accurate diagnosis and treatment.
