Trimming an Eastern Redbud Treer #875081

Asked June 28, 2024, 10:51 AM EDT

I just purchased and planted an Eastern Redbud tree from Gertens. It has a trunk diameter of 1 1/2 inches and stands about 8 feet tall. There are two small lower limbs coming off then trunk that I would like to remove so the tree is nicely shaped. Can I do that now? Thanks. P.S. The tree’s other name is Cercis canadensis

Expert Response

The best time to prune redbuds is late winter or early spring, when the tree is dormant and before sap starts to flow.  However, if you're just pruning two small branches, you can do that now.  Here is a worksheet prepared by the U of Mn that explains how to prune trees.
