Haskap curly and shrivelled #875051

Asked June 27, 2024, 11:32 PM EDT

Hi there my honey berry has portions with yellow curly leaves. Every year it has a small number of feeble  berries. They dry up and kind of curl in a way like the leaves as well. It seems only parts of the plant are affected and every once in a while a berry makes it to maturity, but not often. What's going on?

Sincerely,

Shriveled and sad

Thank you for your question, Anna.  You have two issues going on here.  The yellowing ia a symptom that your plant has the virus described here:  https://pnwhandbooks.org/plantdisease/host-disease/honeysuckle-lonicera-spp-yellow-vein

Viruses are not "alive", so there is no cure.  The virus is carried from plant to plant by whiteflies, which are impossible to eradicate in the garden.

The curling may be either powdery mildew, a fungus, or an insect infestation.  This is powdery mildew:  https://pnwhandbooks.org/plantdisease/host-disease/honeysuckle-lonicera-spp-powdery-mildew

Several insects infest honeysuckle, most often aphids.  https://ipm.ucanr.edu/PMG/GARDEN/PLANTS/honeysuckle.html#:~:text=Plant%20Identification,white%2C%20pink%2C%20or%20purple.

I can't tell if you have aphids, and the photos are not clear enough to tell if there is mildew.  Perhaps you can examine them to see what is there.
