Some of the leaves on my Chanticleer tree are turning reddish brown? Is this disease? Overwatering maybe?

Hello there and thank you for using Ask Extension.

Your tree appears to have Apple scab.  Fortunately, it is not lethal. It thrives under moist conditions.  Watering the leaves of the tree can make it worse.

The culprit is the fungus, which are the dark spots.  In the case of your tree, the most infected leaves are dying and the red pigment is now exposed, just like in the fall.  The leaves that are newly infected have black spots, but have not killed the leaf... yet.

It is too late to treat it with a fungicide this year.  The important thing to do is to rake up all the leaves this fall and dispose of them.  The fungus overwinters on the dead leaves.  If the loss of leaves is severe over the course of the summer, you may want to apply a fungicide next spring to reduce the amount of infections next year.

Here's some information on apple scab from the University of Wisconsin.  https://hort.extension.wisc.edu/articles/applescab/

In the meantime, be sure to give good care to your tree.  That means appropriate water (not too much or too little). Fertilizer is not needed.

If you have further questions, let me know.
