Zucchini and Yellow Squash plants Ant infestation #875034

Asked June 27, 2024, 7:20 PM EDT

How to get rid of ants that are all over our zucchini and Yellow squash plants this year? Haven't had this problem for years. Is it OK to sprinkle BONIDE Garden Dust on the plant? Our concern is that the chemical may get into the vegetable itself. Second question: Is it OK to spray Peppermint Oil mixture near the plants to keep rabbits and rodents away? We purchased a bottle of "Essentiallly KateS" premium peppermint oil from Troy Botanical Gardens LLC. Instructions are to dilute with a carrier oil - didn't say what kind of oil..

Expert Response

Good Morning Herman,

Thank you for contacting the U of M Extension Service.

Are the ants hurting your plants? First determine if there is a problem before you start applying chemicals. It looks like your plants are healthy.

As with any chemical, read the label on the Bonide to determine if you can use it on vegetable plants. I am not familiar with the chemical.

The information on the Extension website is "research based". I am not familiar with all garden products as your peppermint oil product. Here is a link to an article about rodents in the garden: https://blog-fruit-vegetable-ipm.extension.umn.edu/2021/08/are-rodents-and-bunnies-nibbling-your.html

Good Luck!
